Guest post by Brooke Sturdevant

Today please welcome guest blogger Brooke Sturdevant. She wrote this when she was in second grade about our move to South Carolina.

The goodbye happened on a dark and hot night. We heard a soft knock at the door. It was my grandparents. We sat down and they talked. You know Sparky has had some problems and I said yes quietly. Then they said we have to move. I cried a lot and a lot. A few minutes later, after I stopped crying, they gave me a beach bag for when we go on vacation with them, and a toy parrot so I don't forget them, a golf ball, a piece of sea glass. They were all cool. After they gave me the stuff, Gigi whispered "I know this is going to be hard." Then she gave me a big hug. It was very hard. We've got to help them move the stuff in the truck. It was fun. A couple of months later, we came to visit them. I miss my grandparents. They are far away, but they're in my heart.

  2. This is such a well-written post, Brooke. I especially love the first line, "The goodbye happened on a dark and hot night." That hooked me right away and I couldn't wait to read the rest. Goodbyes are definitely hard, and I thank you so much for sharing your experience.

  3. I love that your GiGi gave you some special tokens to remember them by. My grandparents had to move to Florida when I was little and I remember writing letters to them all the time because my gramma missed us to much. It was fun to go visit them though. Thank you for writing this post and sharing your pictures, Brooke! You have a great career ahead of you. Keep on writing!

  4. Brooke, what a fabulous post! Thank you for sharing your experience and feelings about your grandparents moving. It's hard to be away from family. My son is moving away to Austin next month. While I am sad to be away from him, I'm excited for all the new experiences he will have. Like it was fun for you to visit your Gigi, I know it will be fun to visit my son! Keep making memories and writing them down. Someday you can put them all in a book! :)

  10. Oh, Brooke - what a sweet story. I know your grandparents miss you as much as you miss them. The fun part of going through all that hard stuff is that now when you visit them, those times are EXTRA-special. And you're absolutely right. When someone is in our heart, they are never far away.
