Going the extra mile

“The teaching of the Sermon on the Mount is not--Do your duty, but--Do what is not your duty. It is not your duty to go the second mile, to turn the other cheek, but Jesus says if we are His disciples we shall always do these things. There will be no spirit of--"Oh, well, I cannot do any more, I have been so misrepresented and misunderstood". . . Never look for right in the other man, but never cease to be right yourself. We are always looking for justice; the teaching of the Sermon on the Mount is--Never look for justice, but never cease to live it.”
― Oswald Chambers, My Utmost for His Highest

Merriam Webster defines justice as, " the process or result of using laws to fairly judge and punish crimes and criminals."

Judge and punish. The Bible tells us not to judge others, and Oswald Chambers tells us to never look for justice.

Working with the public you learn very early that the customer is always right. I've learned to bite my tongue and care for customers whether I've agreed with them or not. Because I work in a pharmacy, we often go the extra mile to help a customer get their medicine even if we don't have it or if the insurance company won't pay for it.

When I'm shopping I try to show appreciation for good customer service. Tim laughs at me when we get a bad clerk or waiter because I consider it a challenge to make them smile. I'm not sure if this is what Jesus meant by turning the other cheek and going the extra mile, but if my actions help somebody else for even a moment, I'm happy.

How do you go the extra mile?

  1. I'm learning to go that extra mile. I tend to be an encourager by nature (a trait I've only picked up on about myself as I've gotten older) but sometimes I'm too rushed to realize a someone just needs a smile:)
